Linda & JR

Columbus Museum of Art Wedding

a memorable, fun and convenient weekend

For Linda & JR's Columbus Museum of Art wedding, we brought their design priorities together into a cohesive, intentional whole: graphic, art-inspired style; an explosion of Ohio’s springtime beauty; an analogous color scheme that could support some departures, like the wedding party's rainbow attire and Chinese traditional red candy boxes; and experiential elements for their guests, like a flower-meadow photo gallery and handwritten notes attached to their place cards.

When this absolute gem of a couple came to us, they had two main priorities: a memorable, fun and convenient weekend for their family and friends, and a design that would cohesively meld their personalities.

Here's how we did it.

First, we found a location with plenty to do and great food (yay, Columbus!), and a venue that offered both built-in guest activities and a blank slate.

This simple-but-fun weekend focused mostly on local food and opportunities to spend time together, and included a rehearsal dinner at Watershed Distillery, welcome drinks at Stories on High, after-hours wedding day viewing of the Columbus Museum of Art galleries and reception dinner by Schokko Art Cafe, and a delicious farewell brunch with a spectacular view of the city at the Columbus Hilton.

We then took a deep dive into their individual design preferences (Linda: natural seasonal elements, textural florals, variety of colors but not too much contrast; JR: bold graphic elements, clean lines, balance, good natural light, art references). Some of those things might sound contradictory - but we love a good challenge, especially when a couple trusts us and their wedding pro Dream Team to make it happen beautifully.

Two thoughtful priorities that emerged right at the beginning of our time working together were including calla lilies in the floral design to honor JR’s late father, and writing each guest party a personal note of appreciation. Both the bride’s and groom’s families’ heritage have the tradition of starting the newlyweds’ life with sweetness - so guests were sent home with sweet treats provided by both Linda and JR’s mothers.

The couple also created a family and love-story photo gallery for guests to peruse while entering the reception, which also referenced the art museum venue setting (practically, this also helped soften a blank white hallway!). They also crafted a photo guest book that included pictures of EVERY GUEST. Friends and family were absolutely delighted to find their own photo and write a note.

And lastly: a surprise ROYGBIV wedding party! Linda emailed us a couple months before the wedding to let us know that, to surprise JR, she was instructing her attendants to dress themselves in the colors of the rainbow. As we mentioned earlier, JR leans toward neutrals and modern industrial style, whereas Linda loves COLOR. Scroll to see his reaction as he realized what was happening when the attendants entered the ceremony!

There are lots of different ways to approach wedding design, and every designer has their own secret sauce. Ours? Bringing order and beauty to chaos, so your wedding is an intentionally cohesive visual and experiential representation of exactly who you are as individuals and as a couple. We will never try to talk you into something you don't want for the sake of our design portfolio, ask you to prioritize design elements you don't really care about, or try to fit you into a specific style box. Your wedding should look like you, not our Instagram grid.
